From Russia, Just Barely: Adopted at 16, Days Before the Ban

Motherlode Blog: From Russia, Just Barely: Adopted at 16, Days Before the Ban

Elya Nauta and her parents.

“You didn’t know whether to laugh, cry, ” Mr. Nauta said about how he felt once the plane’s wheels lifted off from the Moscow airport terminal on Dec. 29. “You just had an enormous sigh of relief. ”

“The number of children that are adopted from Russia is so large this is a problem felt by families everywhere, ” stated Daniel Nehrbass, executive director of the adoption company Nightlight Christian Adoptions. While he did not use the Nautas, his agency since 1994 assisted nearly 1, 000 families adopt children through Russia. The agency had 15 families attempting to adopt from Russia when the ban went in to effect. Only three families were able to adopt.

The actual Nautas’ lives are now mainly consumed with the daily challenges of parenthood: helping Elya, who transforms 18 on Oct. 3, improve her British enough to learn how to drive, and hearing exactly what she wants to do for a career (she is actually talking about becoming a veterinarian. ) They also help the girl with everything that comes with her Russian background, through being taunted by her classmates about the Birkenstock boston Marathon bombings, to her cheers for Russian number skaters during the Winter Olympics.

“She’s Russian, ” Mr. Nauta said. “We’re not trying to remove her nationality. ”

“It had been just stunning, ” Mr. Nauta said. “Her eyes were so sad. We felt therefore drawn to this girl. ”

In August 2011, Mr. Yoder called the Nautas from Russia and said he previously met Elya once again. She asked Mr. Yoder if he would adopt her. He said whilst he could not, he knew a family who might, and reached out to the Nautas. After the Nautas received the blessing of their older children, they chose to adopt. Because Elya was so old, additionally they knew that they had to move quickly.

“This may perhaps be her last opportunity to be adopted, ” Mister. Nauta said.

By 2011, most adoption companies had stopped working on adoptions from St. Petersburg, where Elya was living, because they had demonstrated too difficult. The Nautas quickly learned the reason why: Bureaucrats repeatedly sent back their paperwork citing mistakes. In December 2011, a judge in St. Petersburg halted the Nautas’ adoption entirely until a good adoption treaty was ratified between Russia and also the United States.

“It was a slow death, ” Mister. Nehrbass said of the Russian ban on adoptions from the United States. “We knew that Russia had been trying to slow down adoptions. ”

But the Nautas obtained plenty of positive signs from Russians to move ahead. During their three visits, the Russians they fulfilled praised them for their perseverance and said the only real people hurt by the adoption ban were the kids................

How Kim Kardashian and Kanye West took over Paris fashion week

Photograph: Bertrand Rindoff Petroff/Getty Images

With hindsight, this was the tipping point when having Kimye at Paris fashion week went from fun to borderline dull. Were there no other celebrities in Paris? When the Kardashian Wests arrived 40 minutes late at the Lanvin show (with matching cleavage) they were met with boos from photographers who were fed up with waiting for them. At the Givenchy show Mademoiselle, North West’s front-row seat with its handwritten label was an Instagram phenomenon. (And rightly so; who doesn’t love calligraphy?) But when baby’s experimental chiffon outfit got more attention than Riccardo Tisci’s Game of Thrones sexiness, there was a sense that the Wests had overcommitted to the catwalks and should perhaps go and see the Eiffel tower or something.
Double cleavage.
We enjoyed studying Kim’s face, with it’s angles cut like a perfect Graff diamond. We are in awe of Bodyguard’s professionalism, we can tolerate Kanye’s decolletage and would have hearts of stone if we didn’t find North adorable. But, guys, would you mind if we said au revoir now and got back to the actual trends? And if you plan on staying until the end would you at least mind penning the odd show review?

Ukips wag tax shows how little they know about bags, shoes and class

Actually, Phoebe, it turns out this is not how Farage plans to woo the working class at all. Only 48 hours after the party mooted what for some reason was described by the media as “the wag tax” (because only girlfriends of footballers like posh shoes, you see), Farage promptly ditched it, saying: “It was never put forward as a policy. It was put forward as something that should be investigated … As far as I’m concerned it’s dead, it was a discussion point yesterday, it isn’t going to happen.” Bless Ukip with its “let’s throw any old idea at the wall and see if it sticks. Anything to get attention!” Who wouldn’t want to have these folks in charge?

Vogue Japan Toasts 15th Anniversary Issue

SAYONARA: Olivier Rousteing, Farida Khelfa, Nicolas Kirkwood, Peter Pilotto, Tom Pecheux and Orlando Pita were among guests at a brunch hosted by Vogue Japan on Sunday at Paris’ Kinugawa restaurant.
There, Vogue Japan toasted its 15th anniversary issue, a Mario Testino special fronted by Miranda Kerr sporting a traditional geisha costume. The cover was styled by Anna Dello Russo, and on the gatefold Kerr is dressed as a samurai.
“I love the Japanese people, traditions, the food,” said the model while eating sushi. She sported a Céline blouse, H&M pants and a Versace belt. “I like to mix things.”
“It is a very sophisticated brunch,” noted Karlie Kloss, who showed up in simple pearl gray blouse and pants. “I like these muffins going around.”
“It was so much fun last night [at the Jean Paul Gaultier show]. Rossy de Palma was hilarious,” said Kehla. “For a last show, it was really nice. It’s a way to say ‘ciao’ with passion. And there were some really beautiful outfits.”
“I loved the Madame de Fontenay look,” added Pecheux, explaining to Pita the reference to Geneviève de Fontenay, who ran the Miss France contest for years.
“I think I was Japanese in another life. I am so attracted to the culture,” said Pita, who masterminded the hair look for the Dior spring 2007 couture show.
“The collection was inspired by Cio-Cio San, the geisha,” he continued. “It was one of the highlights.”

China in Paris Resonates With Buyers

ASIAN APPEAL: While their names might not mean much yet internationally, that may soon be set to change. The first commercial edition of the China in Paris showroom — as previous events have been for PR only — attracted a wealth of retailers including Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s and Opening Ceremony.
Nine designers from across China are showcasing a diverse range of styles, from red carpet favorite Kun Lu’s new ready-to-wear line Mikumkum to irreverent print specialist Kilin Chen via former dancer Siv Zhang’s fluid outsized maxi dresses.
And while the designers present are keen to build a distribution base outside their home market, gaining international retail accounts is also likely to help them to boost their business at home.
“Chinese customers are now growing up with demand for something other than international fashion brands,” said Miuki Wen, who designs a collection of elegant silk dresses with just a touch of oriental embellishment.
“Last night we had a cocktail party and a lot of Chinese buyers came, too,” she enthused.
The other designers at the showroom, organized by the China National Garment Association and Inlife, a Chinese luxury brand consortium, were Jie Si, Kilin Chen, Niki Qin, Allan Qi, Ji Cheng and Lilian Wen.

Americans in Paris Build European Exposure

TRANSATLANTIC TRENDSPOTTING: Labels showing at the seventh session of the Americans in Paris program — created by the Council of Fashion Designers of America and Vogue — reported a brisk session so far on Sunday afternoon, notably when it came to international press attendance.
“It’s been non-stop,” said Antonio Azzuolo, who was showing his new women’s wear collection in Paris for the first time. “There’s no down time.”
The designer, who works under the A.A. Antonio Azzuolo label, said buyers were responding well to his white shirt dresses and soft tuxedo jackets.
“It’s been very press-heavy, but we’ve seen people we wouldn’t see in the U.S.,” said Alexa Adams, one half of design duo Ohne Titel.
For Misha Nonoo, showing for the second time, it was interesting to observe how tastes for her designs differ in Europe. “In New York they love the print and the color; here they tend to gravitate towards the darker looks,” she said.
Nonoo praised the Americans in Paris initiative for the outreach it gives, and said she thought the mix of brands showing this season was particularly balanced.
Belgian-born designer Tim Coppens, known for his men’s wear and a finalist for the LVMH Prize earlier this year, was showing his new women’s collection for the first time in Europe.
“I didn’t want to make it too different to men’s because that’s what the ladies want,” he said of the designs, which have already been picked up by Barneys in the U.S.
All 10 labels showcased at the three-day event, which closes Monday evening at 8 Rue de Valois, are former CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalists. They also include Alejandro Ingelmo, George Esquivel, Giulietta, Marc Alary, Public School and Tome.

Solange Azagury-Partridge Opens Paris Boutique

NO PLACE LIKE HOME: Solange Azagury-Partridge sought a home-away-from-home for her first Paris point of sale, and she found it in a former storage space at the entrance of Hôtel Costes.
“I used to spend all my free time here,” the jewelry designer said.
She described the petite space, inaugurated Sunday evening, as “a hybrid” between her own sensibilities and those of Jacques Garcia, behind the décor of the Paris fashion hotspot.
Its walls are dominated by dusty-pink velvet-lined black wooden display cases inspired by a bookcase in the London-based designer’s office. It also features a rug and chandelier she created, as well as Azagury-Partridge’s signature star-shaped presentation case.
The only other furniture is a studded wooden desk and chairs.
