ASIAN APPEAL: While their names might not mean much yet internationally, that may soon be set to change. The first commercial edition of the China in Paris showroom — as previous events have been for PR only — attracted a wealth of retailers including Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s and Opening Ceremony.
Nine designers from across China are showcasing a diverse range of styles, from red carpet favorite Kun Lu’s new ready-to-wear line Mikumkum to irreverent print specialist Kilin Chen via former dancer Siv Zhang’s fluid outsized maxi dresses.
And while the designers present are keen to build a distribution base outside their home market, gaining international retail accounts is also likely to help them to boost their business at home.
“Chinese customers are now growing up with demand for something other than international fashion brands,” said Miuki Wen, who designs a collection of elegant silk dresses with just a touch of oriental embellishment.
“Last night we had a cocktail party and a lot of Chinese buyers came, too,” she enthused.
The other designers at the showroom, organized by the China National Garment Association and Inlife, a Chinese luxury brand consortium, were Jie Si, Kilin Chen, Niki Qin, Allan Qi, Ji Cheng and Lilian Wen.
