Americans in Paris Build European Exposure

TRANSATLANTIC TRENDSPOTTING: Labels showing at the seventh session of the Americans in Paris program — created by the Council of Fashion Designers of America and Vogue — reported a brisk session so far on Sunday afternoon, notably when it came to international press attendance.
“It’s been non-stop,” said Antonio Azzuolo, who was showing his new women’s wear collection in Paris for the first time. “There’s no down time.”
The designer, who works under the A.A. Antonio Azzuolo label, said buyers were responding well to his white shirt dresses and soft tuxedo jackets.
“It’s been very press-heavy, but we’ve seen people we wouldn’t see in the U.S.,” said Alexa Adams, one half of design duo Ohne Titel.
For Misha Nonoo, showing for the second time, it was interesting to observe how tastes for her designs differ in Europe. “In New York they love the print and the color; here they tend to gravitate towards the darker looks,” she said.
Nonoo praised the Americans in Paris initiative for the outreach it gives, and said she thought the mix of brands showing this season was particularly balanced.
Belgian-born designer Tim Coppens, known for his men’s wear and a finalist for the LVMH Prize earlier this year, was showing his new women’s collection for the first time in Europe.
“I didn’t want to make it too different to men’s because that’s what the ladies want,” he said of the designs, which have already been picked up by Barneys in the U.S.
All 10 labels showcased at the three-day event, which closes Monday evening at 8 Rue de Valois, are former CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalists. They also include Alejandro Ingelmo, George Esquivel, Giulietta, Marc Alary, Public School and Tome.
