Who needs clear skies? Clouds — so naturally resembling the stroke of a paintbrush or a swath of billowing silk — have delighted artists throughout the ages. Visitors to the 18th-century plaster staircase in Sicily’s Palazzo Biscari (center) might feel as if they have taken a stairway to heaven — so, too, might day-trippers to Cannon Beach, Ore. (bottom right), where the water mirrors the sky.
