How to Choose the Right Position for Curtain Rods

Curtain rod placement is an important element of room decor.

Drapes perform several functions in decor. Sometimes they frame a view. Often they offer privacy. Inside a room, they often provide a major decorative element, making their own colour or pattern statement. Curtains also make a substantial contribution to a sense associated with interior space. Their placement at or around windows can make a room seem large and bright or cramped and dreary. Hang your curtains to maximize their own contribution to your decor.

Curtain Functions

Placement of curtains should be governed by what you would like your curtains to do, interior designer Sabina Vavra said. Identify whether your own curtains will function mostly as a part of room decor, a filter of exterior lighting and view, or a tool to change the visual size of your windows. Drapes often serve more than one purpose, but determining what they are intended to do is essential in order to hanging them in the right position.

Curtains in Room Decor

Regarding your curtains among the blocks of color or pattern in your decor will help you determine their dimension and how much of your space they cover. Like the couch, the rug along with other large decorative elements, curtains have a role to play in the balance of colors, designs and textures in your overall scheme. A large expanse of lush dark colour, full-length burgundy brocade drapes for example , will strongly affect several components of your own scheme. Partially covering your windows, they block out some exterior light. Shut at night, they constitute a large area of intense color that might make the room appear smaller. Conversely, pale blue sheers might let in more light but in the expense of partially exposing an unattractive view or providing a poor stability for a modern black leather couch and vividly patterned area rugs and walls art. The fullness, fabric and placement of your curtains interact with other components in your decor to create the overall look and feel of your room.

Curtains as Light Filters

Weight and fabric kind play a large part in light control, as does placement at or around the actual window. Professional decorators recommend positioning curtain rods above the window frame, rather than onto it, and extending the length of the rod so curtains frame but don't cover big portions of the window. Extending the curtain rod anywhere from 3 to 6 ins from the top corners of the frame lets light in through most of the windowpane while maintaining the look of drapes. Drapes can be placed so that only an inch overlaps every edge of the window for maximum effect, according to SAS Interiors.

Curtains as well as Spatial Effects

Positioning curtain rods above and outside window frames creates a feeling of larger windows. Often used as a way to widen narrow windows, curtain rod positioning can also enlarge small windows and prevent a choppy look to interior walls. Installation curtain rods several inches above the window frame or even close to the ceiling can unify small or awkwardly placed windows, implying that the window area extends ground to ceiling, making ceilings seem higher or creating an expansive drape wall, making the whole room seem larger.
