Where to Stay, Eat, and Shop in Portland

Portlandia marathons have you itching to visit Stumptown? One of fashion photographers Janell Shirtcliff shares her insider haunts for a jaunt to the hipster mecca

After 10 years modeling for the loves of Levi's and Urban Outfitters, L. A. -based Janell Shirtcliff began looking around for an exit plan. Fashion had been an accidental profession, but she cherished that it allowed her to indulge her wanderlust and bring her boy, Bowie, now age seven, along. "He has so many stamps in his passport, inch says Shirtcliff. "It's adorable. "

The 31-year-old found the answer right before her. "Everywhere I went, I ended up collecting beautiful, ornate pieces, that meant I was hoarding all these vintage clothes. So I started a store. " The girl online shop, Lonelydot. (Lonelydot. com), is filled with items that could otherwise be acquired just through hours of thrifting-a mustard-colored velvet baby-doll, a white leather coat with black trim. (Shirtcliff began shooting pictures for the site and quickly found herself with another accidental calling, photography. )

These days, between 2 careers and occasional excursions to Coachella with pals Mia Moretti as well as Katy Perry, Shirtcliff's very busy life also includes her fiancé, Sam Charlie, lead singer of the band Youngblood Hawke and a native of Portland, Or. He's offered her the happy excuse to get to know the bike-friendly food city-and not even the approximately 164 rainy days it gets a year can lower Shirtcliff's enthusiasm. Her most recent trip was in August, to join Martin (he'd already been on tour the previous month), stock up for Lonelydot., and get inspired. "Anyone who else goes should definitely bring a fresh journal, " she says. "I wish I could get up there every morning. " Here are her tips for how to make the most of a location where it's possible to find artisanal everything, sift through vintage wares for hours, and, having a short car ride just beyond city limits, explore overgrown forests as well as serene lakes.

STAY:

"Normally we're with Sam's family members, but this time we wanted to be romantic, so we booked a room at the RiverPlace Hotel. It can right on the Willamette River, and we had views of two bridges along with a boatyard. The hotel loans guests free bikes, and we spent the majority of our own time biking around downtown. " For a scenier experience, travelers can take a look at (and check into) the Ace Hotel, which recently opened a undercover space, Pepe le Moko, that caters to night owls.

EAT:

"The wood-fired pizzas at Oven and Shaker were so tasty I wanted to cry. The place also makes its own ginger ale. The sea food everywhere was amazing-we got oysters and martinis at the Parish. I'm not really a big dessert person, but I made an exception at a spot called Sweedeedee-if you go, you have to get the salted-honey pie, and they have corncakes so good it's messed up-and at Salt & Straw, where people go nuts for the ice cream. They generate the waffle cones fresh, right in front of you. " Thai food fiends may also get their fix at the city's outpost of mini chain Pok Pok.

SHOP:

"There are so many tucked-away vintage-store gems sprinkled through each and every neighborhood. SE Hawthorne Boulevard is a great spot to wander down, and NW twenty third Avenue in Nob Hill is a quintessential adorable street with a lot of classic stores. This time I bought so much I had to leave a few things behind to become shipped. " Shirtcliff stopped by Porch Light, in the Pearl District as well, where one can pick up perfectly twee home items, such as an old-timey wrought-iron ball-of-twine stand.

READ:

"Powell's Books is one of the biggest bookstores on the planet, with both used and new sections. It has a rare-books room filled with collector's versions that are so expensive you have to go through a special detector when you leave to make sure you are not stealing anything. That's my favorite room. "

VISIT:

"Sam played a show at McMenamins, this compound on the outskirts of city that's like a weird village with a hotel and bars and restaurants. As well as there's a vineyard-they make their own wine. " Or take in the city's Worldwide Rose Test Garden in Washington Park, which features 650 different types of the bloom.

DAY TRIP:

"There are so many magical places simply outside of town. The coast is breathtaking, but this time we went to Detroit River, two hours away. Sam's family has a house there, and we went on lots of fishing and hiking excursions. "
