Seaside season is upon us. So while packing your beach tote with SPF and a floppy hat, you’ll want to toss in a great summer read, as well. We studied last year’s favorites (think: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn and Friday Night Lights by H. G. Bissinger) and narrowed down this particular season’s best reads a list of books that fit right in with last year’s top sellers. Read on to find the hot new book that speaks to your individual preference.
If you loved Gone Girl, you’ll love You Should Have Known by Jean Hanff Korelitz ($26; amazon. com). It’s a psychological thriller with a Manhattan counselor who discovers that her perfect life is not what it seems when the girl uncovers shocking truths about those closest to her.
If Friday Night Lamps was one of your faves, you’ll enjoy The One & Only by Emily Giffin ($28; amazon. com). But be sure to throw a back of tissues in this beach tote because this one is a tearjerker: A tale of friendship and devotion in a small, football-crazed Texas town shows how quickly things can change when tragedy difficulties all that the characters hold dear.
If Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter was up your alley, try The Vacationers by Emma Straub ($27; amazon . com. com). With the Spanish island of Mallorca as the backdrop, Straub tells the actual penetrating story of family tensions rising to the surface over a summer holiday. We assure you, it’s too compelling to leave your chaise élancée!
If you enjoyed Room by Emma Donoghue, pick up the author’s newest name Frog Music ($27; at amazon. com). Donoghue brings the same sensitivity for this period piece, which explores the unsolved 1876 San Francisco murder of Jenny Bonnet through the eyes of the bohemian friend she left behind.
All of these page turners will keep your eyes glued to the screen pages and entertained while experiencing the sun.
