T Magazine: A Photographer’s Moving Portrait of Rural Life in a Changing America

Jason Vaughn

Jer Vaughn’s “Hide” - a series of photographs of deer holds in the Wisconsin countryside, now captured in a book of the identical name - originally began as an exploration of the transforming values of the hunting tradition in the state. But when the particular arrival of the photographer’s first son became imminent and also Vaughn was diagnosed with leukemia, the series took over a more intimate meaning. Vaughn began interviewing the local family members for whom the deer stands were a kind of treasure, a familial legacy to be passed down through generations. And as a result of celebrating the violence of the hunt, people chatted of intimate time spent together as a family and the significance of the sport as a way to put food on the table. The quality of light and also stillness in the images paints a moving portrait regarding rural life in a changing America. “Now that the publication is coming out, I feel like it’s a good ending to be able to my story, ” Vaughn says. “While I was unwell I had struggled with whether I had a legacy to be able to leave my son, and now I have something tangible, any physical reminder of the hardship that I went through. ”
