1 . Despite raking in £1. 03bn in the second quarter associated with 2014, Ralph Lauren comes from humble beginnings. He started creating neckties in 1967, and expanded his business having a loan of around £30, 000 a year later.

2 . Their 1983 safari collection was a hit - and a fresh theme that he returns to regularly - but this individual hadn’t been to Africa when he designed it. Thirty-odd many years later, he still hasn’t got a stamp in the passport from any of the 47 countries that make up the landmass African continent.

3. He’s a massive fan of Downton Abbey - not surprising when you realise the 1920s tend to be central to his design world. Lauren designed the actual wardrobe for the 1974 film adaptation of The Great Gatsby, kitting out Robert Redford in that famous pink match.

4. The Ralph Lauren Polo shirt - first introduced in 1972 - is currently a classic for the brand. Its tiny embroidered polo gamer on the chest is one of fashion’s most recognisable trademarks, ripe for copyists. The Yolo polo - the homage that substituted the polo player for an picture of Drake - went viral last year.

5. They have kept busy during six decades of designing. There are twenty five brands in the Lauren stable - running from the top end Purple label to the self-explanatory Denim & Supply. Punta Ralph Lauren has been in the spotlight again recently, having a womenswear collection launched on the runway this season, and a Main Park presentation at September’s New York fashion week.

6. Lauren is a favourite of the American establishment but he could be also collected religiously by Lo-Lifes, a New York bunch which has worn head-to-toe Lauren since the 1980s. The Ron Lauren bear - originally on sweatshirts in the nineties - is the gang mascot, and came back briefly onto sweaters last year due to popular demand.

7. A possible birthday present to himself might be a classic car. Lauren collects them, but not any old fixer-uppers : ones that are so rare that they’re of art gallery quality. In 2011, the Musee des Arts Decoratifs within Paris displayed them - one-off Bugattis and Ferraris included.

8. Not really about Lauren but related. Their son, David Lauren, married Lauren Bush, the relative of George W in 2011. She is now called Lauren Bush Lauren.
