The fanny pack as we know it has been reinvented as a belt bag. Now a city-sleek accessory, the old-time tourist essential could make going hands-free cool, and everyday practical. It will look best with other streamlined basics: slung low over a striped shirt and jeans, say, or a leather skirt and crisp button-down.
Oodles and Oodles Of Doodles
The Versace gown Angelina Jolie wore for her wedding, embroidered with drawings made by her kids, could spawn a gazillion knockoffs. But no need to wait for the big day to get the look when you can conjure the youthful spirit courtesy of Carven, which is offering this sweet embroidered shirt (there is another with an allover doodle design); Mary Katrantzou, whose fall patterns are strewn with telephones, swans and costume jewelry; or Markus Lupfer, who did these pistachio pumps printed with playful cats and lightning bolts. On the horizon: cartoons. At the Coach spring presentation during Fashion Week, Stuart Vevers showed bags and sweaters with cartoon characters created by the artist and animator Gary Baseman.
As Tough As Pearls
Pearls are trending in a big way. During New York Fashion Week, we sawRihanna at the Adam Selman show wearing a long strand with a white baby-doll dress. Joseph Altuzarra deployed them as trim on sexy sheer dresses. And doubtless there were fashion editors who wore their Dior behind-the-ear pearl earrings with their thrashed denim and dolled-up skirts. More irreverent than innocent, the new pearls look freshest when they veer tough, in ear cuffs, chokers and safety-pin earrings, like this pair by Wouters & Hendrix for Club Monaco.
Wrap Yourself Around This Idea
Once Burberry, Chloé and Stella McCartney sent their covetable blanket coats down the fall runways, and the fashion flock swooned, a trend was in the offing. Now, with the chill coming on, it could be time to cozy up to one. This oversize poncho is from the New York label Apiece Apart, a smart collection of wardrobe staples, and made by artisans in Peru. Imagine it as your wraparound accomplice for a fall weekend, with jeans and a tee.
