When Maria Sharapova pulled out of the U.S. Open with a leg injury on Sunday night, we counterintuitively suggested it wasn’t the best thing for Serena Williams, as Serena has owned Sharapova for more than a decade, winning each of their last 17 matches. It’s also true that Serena is at her best in Grand Slams against her best competition and that the few struggles she ever endures come against players who aren’t considered at the top of their sport.
