Hansberry
Genre: Theater

"Never before, the entire history of the American theater, has
so much of the truth of black people's lives been seen on the
stage," observed James Baldwin shortly before A Raisin in the Sun
opened on Broadway in 1959. Indeed Lorraine Hansberry's award-winning
drama about the hopes and aspirations of a struggling, working-class family
living on the South Side of Chicago connected profoundly with the psyche of
black America--and changed American theater forever. The play's title
comes from a line in Langston Hughes's poem "Harlem,"
which warns that a dream deferred might "dry up/like a raisin in the
sun." "The events of every passing year add resonance to A
Raisin in the Sun ," said The New York Times . "It is as if
history is conspiring to make the play a classic." This Modern Library
edition presents the fully restored, uncut version of Hansberry's
landmark work with an introduction by Robert
Nemiroff. |

Streetcar Named Desire
Tennessee
Williams
Genre: Theater
Price:

Publish Date: September 17, 2004
Publisher: New

Seller: W. W. Norton |

The Pulitzer Prize and Drama Critics Circle Award winning play—reissued
with an introduction by Arthur Miller (Death of a Salesman and The Crucible),
and Williams' essay "The World I Live In." It is a
very short list of 20th-century American plays that continue to have the same
power and impact as when they first appeared—57 years after its Broadway
premiere, Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire is one of those
plays. The story famously recounts how the faded and promiscuous Blanche DuBois
is pushed over the edge by her sexy and brutal brother-in-law, Stanley Kowalski.
Streetcar launched the careers of Marlon Brando, Jessica Tandy, Kim Hunter and
Karl Malden, and solidified the position of Tennessee Williams as one of the
most important young playwrights of his generation, as well as that of Elia
Kazan as the greatest American stage director of the "40s and
"50s. Who better than America's elder statesman of the
theater, Williams' contemporary Arthur Miller, to write as a witness to
the lightning that struck American culture in the form of A Streetcar Named
Desire? Miller's rich perspective on Williams' singular style
of poetic dialogue, sensitive characters, and dramatic violence makes this a
unique and valuable new edition of A Streetcar Named Desire. This definitive new
edition will also include Williams' essay "The World I Live
In," and a brief chronology of the author's
life. |

Antigone, daughter of Oedipus, the late king of Thebes, in defiance of
Creon who rules in his stead, resolves to bury her brother Polyneices, slain in
his attack on Thebes. She is caught in the act by Creon's watchmen and
brought before the king. She justifies her action, asserting that she was bound
to obey the eternal laws of right and wrong in spite of any human ordinance.
Creon, unrelenting, condemns her to be immured in a rock-hewn chamber. His son
Haemon, to whom Antigone is betrothed, pleads in vain for her life and threatens
to die with her. Warned by the seer Teiresias Creon repents him and hurries to
release Antigone from her rocky prison. But he is too late: he finds lying side
by side Antigone who had hanged herself and Haemon who also has perished by his
own hand. Returning to the palace he sees within the dead body of his queen who
on learning of her son's death has stabbed herself to the
heart. |

Filled with passionate speeches and sensitive probing of moral and
philosophical issues, this powerful drama reveals the grim fate that befalls the
children of Oedipus. When Antigone, the daughter of Oedipus, chooses to obey the
law of the gods rather than an unconscionable command from Creon, ruler of
Thebes, she is condemned to death. How the gods take their revenge on Creon
provides the gripping denouement to this compelling tragedy, still one of the
most frequently performed of classical Greek dramas.

Short History of Private Life
Bill
Bryson
Genre: Art

5, 2010
Publisher: Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group
Seller:
Random House, LLC |

From one of the most beloved authors of our time—more than six million
copies of his books have been sold in this country alone—a fascinating excursion
into the history behind the place we call home. “Houses aren’t refuges from
history. They are where history ends up.” Bill Bryson and his family live in a
Victorian parsonage in a part of England where nothing of any great significance
has happened since the Romans decamped. Yet one day, he began to consider how
very little he knew about the ordinary things of life as he found it in that
comfortable home. To remedy this, he formed the idea of journeying about his
house from room to room to “write a history of the world without leaving home.”
The bathroom provides the occasion for a history of hygiene; the bedroom, sex,
death, and sleep; the kitchen, nutrition and the spice trade; and so on, as
Bryson shows how each has figured in the evolution of private life. Whatever
happens in the world, he demonstrates, ends up in our house, in the paint and
the pipes and the pillows and every item of furniture. Bill Bryson has one of
the liveliest, most inquisitive minds on the planet, and he is a master at
turning the seemingly isolated or mundane fact into an occasion for the most
diverting exposition imaginable. His wit and sheer prose fluency make At Home
one of the most entertaining books ever written about private life. BONUS
MATERIAL: This ebook edition includes an excerpt from Bill Bryson's
One Summer. |

To Laius, King of Thebes, an oracle foretold that the child born to him
by his queen Jocasta would slay his father and wed his mother. So when in time a
son was born the infant's feet were riveted together and he was left to
die on Mount Cithaeron. But a shepherd found the babe and tended him, and
delivered him to another shepherd who took him to his master, the King of
Corinth. Polybus being childless adopted the boy, who grew up believing that he
was indeed the King's son. Afterwards doubting his parentage he
inquired of the Delphic god and heard himself the word declared before to Laius.
Wherefore he fled from what he deemed his father's house and in his
flight he encountered and unwillingly slew his father Laius. Arriving at Thebes
he answered the riddle of the Sphinx and the grateful Thebans made their
deliverer king. So he reigned in the room of Laius, and espoused the widowed
queen. Children were born to them and Thebes prospered under his rule, but again
a grievous plague fell upon the city. Again the oracle was consulted and it bade
them purge themselves of blood-guiltiness. Oedipus denounces the crime of which
he is unaware, and undertakes to track out the criminal. Step by step it is
brought home to him that he is the man. The closing scene reveals Jocasta slain
by her own hand and Oedipus blinded by his own act and praying for death or
exile. |

Anthony
Kiedis & Larry Sloman
Genre: Music
Price:
$3.99
Publish Date: October 1, 2004
Publisher:
Hyperion
Seller: Hachette Digital,
Inc. |
|
The New York Times bestseller by one of rock's most provocative
figures Scar Tissue is Anthony Kiedis's searingly honest memoir of a
life spent in the fast lane. In 1983, four self-described
"knuckleheads" burst out of the mosh-pitted mosaic of the
neo-punk rock scene in L.A. with their own unique brand of cosmic hardcore
mayhem funk. Over twenty years later, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, against all
odds, have become one of the most successful bands in the world. Though the band
has gone through many incarnations, Anthony Kiedis, the group's
lyricist and dynamic lead singer, has been there for the whole roller-coaster
ride. Whether he's recollecting the influence of the beautiful, strong
women who have been his muses, or retracing a journey that has included
appearances as diverse as a performance before half a million people at
Woodstock or an audience of one at the humble compound of the exiled Dalai Lama,
Kiedis shares a compelling story about the price of success and excess. Scar
Tissue is a story of dedication and debauchery, of intrigue and integrity, of
recklessness and redemption--a story that could only have come out of the world
of rock. |
