Welcome Allison Teng, 27, of Curvy Girl Chic, who is joining us because our resident plus-size style blogger. She was featured in the March problem of PEOPLE StyleWatch and contributes her thoughts on finding the perfect outfit to the website each week. This week, she gives great tips on rocking the shirtdress trend! (And if her items are sold out, we’ve linked to similar styles below - pleased shopping! )
Shirtdresses could be a challenging silhouette, especially for curvy girls - they can be a bit shapeless, and getting a size where the buttons don’t pull is sometimes tricky. That being said, there are some super complementing characteristics of this piece. It’s all about finding the right style for your body. I personally love this particular design from H&M+. It has a bit of a high-low hem so I don’t have to worry about this being too short in the back, and I can still show off my legs. The front of the gown has vertical tuxedo pleating which helps lengthen your shape, and the self-tie seat belt pulls the otherwise roomy dress in nicely. I usually opt for a style with one of these devices - it’s a good way to keep from losing your waist in the fabric!
The actual V-neckline is another great aspect of this style. It shows off your collarbone and it is great for accommodating bigger busts. In terms of the silhouette, I usually go for options with a flared skirt since straight-cut shirtdresses makes my top-heavy body look like an upside-down bowling pin! Flared styles offer a little more wiggle room in the hips, that is great if you’re curvier! It may take a little time to find your perfect fit, but shirtdresses are a great classic piece that can look great on every body type! Just find the silhouette functions for you. Don’t be afraid to try on a few different shapes!
To add some warmth for fall, I split on a printed Modamix moto jacket with cool quilted stitching at the shoulder blades. Quilting can sometimes add bulk, but this jacket isn’t padded, which assists, and the darker color gives a streamlined look. Moto jackets are generally a great way to coating without losing your shape or looking really bulky. And I love I that the drop color of the dress goes really well with the moody colors of the jacket.
I held my extras neutral with an Alexander Wang clutch (similar style) and Street Bryant boots. I love that these boots are looser around the ankle - much more them easier to wear, especially if you have bigger calves like I do! I also urgent needed to anchor the look with a chunky boot since the dress is made from a lighter in weight chiffon-y material.
This fall, I encourage you all to try out a shirtdress! Experiment with silhouettes, details and colors. There are so many ways to make this style work for you.
