Noted: What Were the Most Tweeted Shows During New York Fashion Week?
Michael Kors is fashion’s $1 billion man, and he’s apparently its social media king as well.
Well, at least on Twitter. Mr. Kors was the most tweeted-about designer over the course of New York Fashion Week, according to data from the social media company. Between Fashion Week’s opening day, Sept. 4, through the end of the night on Thursday, Mr. Kors’s name (and Twitter handle) were tweeted nearly 113,000 times, according to Twitter’s data.
Finishing in second place was Ralph Lauren with nearly 69,000 tweets. Mr. Lauren had the benefit of two shows over the course of the week. Mr. Lauren’s new Polo for Women line had a show in Central Park on Monday night that featured giant holographic models, and the designer’s main label runway show, which included Julianne Moore in the front row, was on Thursday morning.
Alexander Wang, a social media darling, finished in third place with 63,558 tweets. Marc Jacobs was fourth with 54,182 tweets. (Those tweets included both the Marc by Marc Jacobs show on Tuesday, and the Marc Jacobs show that closed out Fashion Week on Thursday evening.) Rounding out the top five was Jeremy Scott with 46,539 tweets. Miley Cyrus, a friend of the designer, came to his show and presented a line of accessories. Her presence was social media catnip.
Twitter reached these numbers by searching for the designer’s name (“Alexander Wang”) or his Twitter handle (“@AlexanderWangNY”). If someone sent a tweet that used shorthand for a designer’s name the way the fashion world so casually does (for instance writing Ralph or Marc or Donna), it was not counted.
There were a little more than 1.25 million tweets about New York Fashion Week, according to the data (the tweet would have to include, hashtag or not, NYFW or Fashion Week). That is a significant bump from last season: In February, there were 574,000 Fashion Week tweets using the same metrics, a Twitter spokeswoman said.
And the biggest tweet of the week? That honor belongs to Rihanna. She tweeted about the Joseph Altuzarra show early Sunday morning, andincluded three pictures of herself sitting front row, including two with her stylist, Mel Ottenberg. That was retweeted more than 8,000 times.
