As the fashion flock moves to London and Part Two of the fashion marathon, competition is heating up between the two cities for the new-ish accolade “Top Fashion Buzzword for 2014.”
It is bestowed by the Texas-based big data company Global Language Monitor, which tracks web pages, blogs, “300,000 print and electronic news organizations” and new social media sites, across the English-speaking world, according to its founder. Paul J.J. Payack. And the title has proved surprisingly coveted among the fashion cities.
London won it in 2013 — the first time a city reached the No. 1 spot — as well as being named “Top Fashion Capital” for 2011 and 2012 (a title New York then seized in 2013), and the British capital is on something of a campaign this year. On the website Female First, a post about London Fashion Week cries, “This season we want to reclaim our title so join the conversation by using the hashtag #LFW.“
Unfortunately, Mr. Payack says the verdict on this year’s buzzword is already in. And the winner is…..
New York!
Not only that: London does not appear in the top 10 ranking at all.
According to the company announcement: ” ‘All Things New York,’ capturing the essence of the New York fashion sense, dominates the 2014 Top Fashion Buzzword list. It is difficult to think of any global fashion trend that does not have a strong presence, if not its origin, in New York City.”
The “all thing” bit sounds a little fuzzy, but Mr. Payack said the company discovered the web was full of “a multitude of fashion-related buzzwords that relate directly to the city.” That added up.
For words to be considered for the list, the company has a number of requirements:
1. They must be found globally, and must not be limited to a certain place or group;
2. They must have a minimum of 25,000 citations, and
3. They must appear in various forms of media.
Anyway, the remainder of the 2014 winning words are:
2. Attitude
3. Reds
4. Underbut(t)
5. VPL (visible panty lines)
6. Boyfriend jeans
7. Side boobs
8. The Kardashian clan
9. Robe-style coats
10. Pastels
“New York” does stick out like a stiletto among Birkenstocks on that list, it seems to me, but nevertheless: The gauntlet has been thrown.
